“This work fits me like a tailor-made suit.”

As I begin typing this story, I look to my left. There I see my work laptop. Still closed now, but tomorrow morning it will be put back on. I catch myself being glad I can get back to work tomorrow. This work fits me like a tailor-made suit.

I don’t want to be Captain Obvious, but a good match between employer and employee is hugely important for being able to achieve good results. Fortunately, I can say that I have enjoyed going to work, I mean working from home, since day one.

Getting to know the new way of working

In April 2020, I started working for my client – an international financial institution. Not only did I have to get acquainted with a new job and new colleagues, but also with the new way of working. For example, I have seen almost all of my colleagues only through a screen. Although this has not always been easy, I have been able to build a good relationship with my team. Something I consider very valuable. However, remote (collaborative) work is again a whole different story to tell….

The key takeaway here is that it simply clicks extraordinarily well between my client and me. This is partly because at this company A) there is a lot of room for personal development, B) I work daily with colleagues who inspire me, C) the work challenges me to think creatively, and the list goes on and on. The match with my client has not been a matter of a series of coincidences. A careful process preceded this. Based on -among other things- a personality test, Young_Coders gets a good idea of who you are as a person and what suits you. Consider: organizational culture, operations, norms, values and so on. They really invest in what your wants and needs are.

Why IT?

Young_Coders made it possible for me to enter the IT world. In the beginning, I was often asked by friends and family why on earth I wanted to work in IT. To the outside world, IT is a geeky industry that is hard to understand. A big misconception if you ask me! To me, working in IT means working on projects that matter. It involves asking the right questions to get to the right answers. In addition to solving complex issues, I derive great satisfaction from good customer relationship management. I strive to be able to provide a positive experience for each customer from the first moment of contact.

NEVER STOP GROWING

Furthermore, I like to always keep growing. No, I’m not talking about the size of my belly here. I am talking about substantive professional knowledge and professional skills. What really appeals to me about Young Coders is that they create great learning opportunities, even for those who – like me – have no background in computer science. It looks at you as an individual and what your potential is. This was the deciding factor for me to choose YoungCoders in particular.

Looking back at the past year, there were many uncertainties surrounding the pandemic and work. Nevertheless, I may soon come to work internally at my client’s office. In any case, one thing is certain: I am going to have a great time at my new employer.
